Non-Profit Intern

WHY WE NEED YOU
The Non-Profit Intern supports the Project Manager and Case Managers at After8toEducate. The Non-Profit Intern will help increase awareness for youth homelessness by broadening their research, participating in outreach, and working in the environment with unsheltered youth firsthand. Non-Profit Interns will be working alongside an experienced MSW while also reporting to the Project Manager.

ABOUT AFTER8TOEDUCATE
After8toEducate ("After8") is a first-of-its-kind public-private collaborative to support unsheltered high school youth in Dallas, bringing together community resources to reduce the number of young adults experiencing homelessness and foster self-sufficiency.

After8toEducate offers an umbrella solution to allow unsheltered high school students to develop academically, emotionally, and socially to ultimately live healthy and productive lives. In collaboration with the Dallas Independent School District, and Community Council of Greater Dallas, After8 provides a three-pillar program at the Fannie C. Harris Youth Center. This program addresses the needs of high school students experiencing housing insecurity in DISD.

RESPONSIBILITIES + FUNCTIONS

Projects: 
  • Help develop outreach materials/giveaways for youth and identify ways to connect and provide resources
  • Engage with community youth, outreach to recreation centers or other public spaces
  • Research relevant issues related to youth homelessness and share findings
  • Participate (if possible) in mentoring program with AT&T 
  • Research - collect statistics, categorizing them and citing sources, relevant to our work, research and learn about relevant policies state and nation-wide that can inform our work

Other opportunities: 
  • Attend youth committee meeting
  • Attend relevant community events as available
  • Conduct an informal needs assessment to identify gaps or opportunities
  • Help determine what to do with the health needs assessment and help write up a summary of the findings for a blog post
  • Researching grants
  • Community education about youth homelessness (advocacy)
  • Data management/ideation
  • Assistance with case management

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Able to demonstrate empathy, professionalism and sense of advocacy.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, and G-Suite.
Creative, strategic, and analytical thinker.
Self-starter with strong attention to detail.
Familiarity with the Dallas education and non-profit landscape is a plus.

HOW IS SUCCESS MEASURED?
Through the effective delivery of high-quality and responsive communications and the increase in the public’s knowledge of the work of After8toEducate. Weekly updates will be communicated between the interns and the Project Manager. To ensure they are targeting their goals, meetings will also be held between the MSW at the location and the Project Manager, to better assist their experience.
